Somehow my sense of smell just seems to be enhanced in the summer. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s because I’m not trapped in the same repetitive combination of smells from my house, to my car, to my job. Whatever it is, I like the smells from late spring and summer much better than other times of the year.
People smell differently, too. It’s hard to explain. No, I don’t go around sniffing people, but sometimes you can just catch a whiff of a person as they walk by. For some people, you can smell that they’ve spent significantly more time working with the dirt while planting their gardens. There’s a distinct smell to freshly turned dirt. For others, they just change their cologne or perfume to something more fruit-based for the summer.
So, in honor of my love for lists, here’s quite a bit of what I’ve been smelling lately, both good and bad:
- Burning marshmallows
- Freshly mowed grass
- Baking bread
- Falling rain
- Churned earth
- Flattened skunks
- Smoking bonfires
- Sweaty skin
- Blossoming flowers
- New perfumes/colognes
Of all of those things, freshly mowed grass may be my favorite, even if I hate mowing. 🙂
